Basic words in sign language help baby talk!

Babies are the best! Sometimes you can just sit and watch them for hours on end and be completely entertained by the way they take in their world. If you are like many of us, you have probably looked into your baby’s eyes and wondered what was going on behind them. It is easy to tell when your baby is in discomfort or has some basic needs that have to be met, but what about the other times? By using some basic words in sign language your baby can communicate with you during those times, too.

Picture yourself outdoors with your baby when a beautiful butterfly flutters by. Your baby excitedly turns to you and begins to make the sign for butterfly! Not only is your baby telling you what he just saw, but he is also sharing his joy at seeing this lovely, little creature with you.

Daddy

How about if your baby can tell you that she is thinking about a family member or loved one when that person is not around. This is something that happened in our home.

Each evening before putting our daughter to bed, Alexandria's daddy would cuddle up with his baby girl and slow dance with her. One afternoon when daddy was at work, my little one turned to me and signed DADDY DANCE! You can imagine how touched we were to know that she was thinking of her daddy while he was away and to also know that their time together each evening was special to her.

Our story is not unique. Babies who sign can often communicate these kinds of special thoughts with their loved ones simply because they have the means to do so. We hope you will experience the same joy on this wondrous journey of signing with your baby as we have.
