Signing Babies are Happy Babies...A Few
Great Things About Sign Language Babies!

Sign Language Babies communicate with their caregivers using simple hand gestures and signs. We think that makes these babies pretty terrific! Here are some of the top reasons we think baby signers are so great!

Less Whining...

Let's face it, no matter how cute the little ones are, whining does not become them! Signing allows babies to get there needs met without all the extra whining!

Clean floors...

Ok, so maybe this one is a bit of a stretch, but keep in mind that babies who sign can tell you when they are finished with their food. Now all babies will play the "throwing things from the highchair to the floor" game, it is natural part of development; however, if they can sign "ALL DONE" when their bellies are full, we can get those plates full of spaghetti and banana chunks off the highchair and into the sink before those games begin!

Cleaner bottoms...

A signing baby can let you know when his diaper is wet or full as soon as it happens. Imagine you are preparing to go on a long car ride and as you strap your presumably freshly diapered angel in the car, he signals that he needs a diaper change! “What…I just changed you,” you say to him. However, knowing full well your baby can tell you when he’s dirty, you flip him over, sneak a peek in the diaper and find that it is indeed dirty! Imagine, again, how grateful you are that your baby did not have to spend the next three hours in a dirty diaper and avoided the horrible diaper rash that would have gone along with it. Thank goodness for his ability to sign!

And my personal favorite:

Seeing the world fresh through their eyes...

As busy adults, we often forget how beautiful the world around us is. With a signing baby, there is an opportunity for us to rediscover our world as they point out through their signs the new things they are observing and experiencing.

To illustrate this point, envision yourself taking a walk with your baby on a crisp spring morning. She’s sitting quietly in the stroller as you briskly walk down the street, your mind focusing on the exercise you are attempting to get and your to-do list for the day. Suddenly, your baby wiggles her body around to face you and signs “FLOWER.” You glance down at her, take quick look around and, not seeing any flowers, you smile down at her and say something like, “Yes, honey, you’re signing flower, how nice.” You go back to your thoughts, but after a few moments, you notice that your little one has turned to face you once more and is continuing to sign flower.

This time, however, she seems to be getting a bit annoyed. You stop pushing the stroller, take a better look around, and, not seeing any flowers, you say to her, “Mommy sees you are signing flower, but there aren’t any flowers here.” At this point, your child looks at you, looks to the side of the road, signs flower then vehemently points to the side of the road. You look and see a bunch of weeds….Oh, but wait a minute – you look again and this time you notice that the weeds are budding tiny little yellow and white flowers. You now understand what your baby wants. You take her out of her stroller and the two of you go and happily explore the flowers together.

These are just a few of the reasons we think sign language babies are awesome! What are your reasons?
