Sign Language Classes Make
Learning Sign Language for Baby Fun!

Why Take Sign Language Classes?

Learning sign language to use with your baby should be an activity you enjoy doing instead of something you put pressure on yourself to do. If you perceive it as "work" and a task you MUST do, rather than a pleasant pursuit of early communication and bonding to share with your little one, you may not get very far. Taking sign language classes with your baby is an excellent way to learn baby sign language and have fun in the process. Many of today’s baby signing classes are set in a Mommy/Daddy and Me like environment and are a great way to bond with your baby while socializing with other parents and caregivers who share your same interests. Classes are usually chock full of catchy songs, rhymes, games, stories and other lively activities that make learning to sign easy and enjoyable.

Baby Sign Language classes are sprouting up all over the country and you can choose from a variety of programs. Many of the popular baby signing programs will certify instructors and allow them to teach classes and workshops using curriculum based on their brand. The majority of certified instructors, however, are independent contractors who operate under their own business names so it can sometimes be a challenge to find an instructor for a specific baby-signing brand unless you go directly to that organization’s website. Generally, if the company certifies instructors, they will have a page on their website where you can find classes in your geographic area. If they do not have classes in your area, your next best option is to do a Web search and see if there are any sign languages classes or workshops offered around your location. While it might not be the exact program you are looking for, it may be worth a call to find out what they have to offer. Ask around and see if you can find others who have taken their class or search the web and see if you can find any customer reviews. Remember, not all baby sign language instructors follow a strict brand of programming and you may be pleasantly surprised and find that their classes are fantastic and end up being the perfect fit for you and your baby!

When deciding what kind of sign language instruction is right for you, be sure to take the duration of the program and how long each lesson lasts into consideration. Classes can range anywhere from 4 to 16 or more weeks and may last from 30 to 90 minutes so you will want to choose a class that you can easily commit to.

If weekly classes do not fit your schedule, workshops are a wonderful alternative. Workshops are often held on weekends and are a great option for working parents. Workshops can last anywhere from 90 minutes to three hours (occasionally longer) and may be offered as adult only or parent/child. If you are unsure as to what kind of workshop is being offered, it is best to check with the instructor as a lengthy workshop may be a bit much for a little one to handle.

No matter whether you choose weekly lessons or single-day workshops, structured sign language classes help make learning sign language for baby easy to do and can be an entertaining and rewarding experience for both you and your baby.
