Why don't they
understand me?
Why use basic baby sign language?
As anyone that has ever dealt with a baby knows, babies have a very effective way of getting the attention of their caregivers….they cry! And if we cannot figure out whatever it is they need right away, they cry even louder. Yikes!
While the crying game does get your immediate attention and probably makes you snap to it, it is certainly not a pleasant experience for either you or your baby.
Basic baby sign language to the rescue!
We know that babies can understand language long before they are able to master the ability to speak. But while there are lots of things that have to happen in the mouth before speech can occur – it takes time for the fine muscles to develop to the point of intelligible speech – babies are fully capable of expressive communication and have the ability to “talk” with their hands.
This is where knowing some baby sign language basics can help. By adding a few basic words in sign language to your daily routine, you can help reduce your baby’s communication frustration.
Teach your baby some simple ASL signs to reduce frustration caused by his inability to communicate his needs.
The wonderful thing about baby signing is that it is very easy to do and, contrary to what some may think, you do not have to learn an entirely new language. We personally prefer and recommend using American Sign Language for babies (ASL for Babies) if you reside in North America; however, any signing program you choose will work as long as you are consistent and persistent in using your chosen signs with your baby.
Signing Babies Are Happy
Babies!
Though babies are completely perfect when they are born, they most certainly have their own distinct personalities. There is no doubt that signing benefits babies of all personality types, but, if your baby's personality happens to be like my little one's at birth – high spirited, a tad impatient, with a zero frustration level – then I can definitely say that teaching your baby sign language would be extremely useful. I cannot tell you that your baby will suddenly develop patience and cry no more; but I can say that signing could absolutely make a difference in helping to reduce your baby’s frustration when trying to communicate.
The more your baby can sign what it is that he or she needs or wants, the easier it will be for you to identify those needs and quickly meet them. This will equate to a happier, more content baby and a peaceful home for all.
Everyone loves a good story...especially when they are about signing babies (ok...so maybe we're just a bit partial)! Visit this page to read stories from others who are signing with their baby or share your own baby signing story here.
